“Elon Musk didn’t just break Twitter—he intentionally dismantled it,” said Paul Ford, a prominent tech commentator, in a widely shared analysis. “Every five minutes, some social scientist publishes a paper saying humans are happiest in small groups. Yet Musk shoved millions into a digital colosseum and called it free speech.”
Clay Shirky, a New York University professor and internet expert, echoed that sentiment in his own sign-off from the platform in late 2022. “Twitter was murdered at the whim of a billionaire high on Ketamine while it was still mostly healthy,” he wrote, referring to Musk’s well-documented drug use and erratic management style.

“It’s been clear for years that jamming a million people into a colosseum and letting them fight it out with free speech isn’t working,” Ford added. “But never has it been more obvious than now, under a billionaire going through a midlife crisis.”
Shirky’s farewell post, which went viral, concluded with a stark warning: “No one who cares about their mental health should be on Twitter at this point, or linking to it, feeding it the attention it thrives on.”
What This Means: A Warning for Society and a Push for Decentralization
The collapse of Twitter signals a broader failure of centralized, ad-driven social networks. Experts argue that the “town square” model—where a single billionaire controls public discourse—is inherently unstable and dangerous.
“Humans are designed for about 150 stable relationships,” Ford noted, paraphrasing anthropologist Robin Dunbar. “Anything beyond that is overclocking. We should all try Mastodon or other decentralized alternatives.”
Users are now urged to abandon X completely. The platform’s ad revenue has dropped more than 50%, and its valuation has plummeted. For the sake of personal mental health and democratic health, cutting ties is the only responsible choice.
“Entomb Twitter deep in concrete with this warning on its capstone,” Ford wrote. “It was murdered by a billionaire on a Ketamine bender.”
