Google has rolled out a significant security update for its Chrome browser, addressing a total of 79 vulnerabilities across desktop and mobile platforms. The new versions—Chrome 148.0.7778.167/168 for Windows and macOS, and Chrome 148.0.7778.167 for Linux—are now available for users. Notably, none of these flaws have been reported as actively exploited in the wild, according to Google’s assessment.

Vulnerability Breakdown and Discovery

In the official Chrome Releases blog post, Srinivas Sista detailed the patched vulnerabilities. The dramatic increase in the number of flaws found this cycle is largely attributed to the use of advanced AI models specialized in vulnerability detection. Google’s internal teams discovered 59 of the issues, while external security researchers reported the remaining 20. In recognition of their contributions, Google has so far awarded $112,000 in bug bounties to these researchers.

Critical and High-Risk Vulnerabilities

Among the 79 patched vulnerabilities, 14 are classified as critical (CVE-2026-8509 through CVE-2026-8522), 37 as high risk, and the remainder as medium risk. The prevalence of use-after-free (UAF) vulnerabilities is especially striking: eight of the critical flaws are UAF issues, and 24 UAF vulnerabilities were patched in total. UAF vulnerabilities occur when a program continues to use memory after it has been freed, potentially allowing attackers to execute arbitrary code.

The Shift Toward Memory-Safe Languages

UAF flaws are a common problem in memory-unsafe languages like C and C++. To mitigate such risks, Google has been actively transitioning to memory-safe languages such as Rust. (Mozilla, for example, has used Rust for some time but still contends with millions of lines of legacy C code.) This move promises to reduce the frequency of these dangerous vulnerabilities in future releases.

Platform-Specific Updates

Alongside the desktop updates, Google has released Chrome for Android 148.0.7778.167 and Chrome for iOS 148.0.7778.166. The Android version addresses the same vulnerabilities as the desktop builds. Additionally, the Extended Stable Channel for Windows and macOS now includes Chromium version 148.0.7778.168, offering an alternative update cadence for enterprise users.
