Cloudflare Announces Massive Layoffs Amid AI Transformation
Cloudflare has laid off more than 1,100 employees globally, the company confirmed today, marking one of the largest workforce reductions in its history. The move comes as the internet infrastructure firm pivots to an 'agentic AI era' that has fundamentally changed how it operates.

'We are reimagining every internal process, team, and role across the company,' founders Matthew Prince and Michelle Zatlyn wrote in an internal email obtained by TechWire. 'This is not a cost-cutting exercise or an assessment of individuals’ performance.'
The decision affects approximately 11% of Cloudflare's workforce, though the company did not specify the exact percentage in its announcement. Affected employees will receive severance packages including full base pay through the end of 2026 and continued healthcare coverage.

Cloudflare's internal AI usage has surged more than 600% in the past three months alone, with employees across departments—from engineering to HR to finance—running thousands of AI agent sessions daily. The company describes itself as its own 'most demanding customer' for AI tools.
The founders emphasized transparency, noting that Prince personally sends every offer letter and that the layoff notifications would come directly from them rather than managers. 'It didn’t feel right for this message to come from anyone other than the two of us,' they wrote.
