AWS Interconnect Now Generally Available

AWS Interconnect, a fully managed private connectivity service, is now generally available, enabling direct connections between Amazon VPCs and VPCs on other cloud providers. The service also introduces a new last-mile capability to simplify high-speed private connections from branch offices, data centers, and remote locations via existing network providers.

"This is a game-changer for enterprise networking teams," said Dr. Werner Vogels, CTO of Amazon Web Services. "We're removing the undifferentiated heavy lifting of managing VPNs, colocation, and third-party fabrics, so teams can focus on applications that drive business value."

Background: The Multicloud Connectivity Challenge

Large enterprises increasingly run workloads across multiple cloud providers to leverage specialized services, meet data residency requirements, or accommodate teams that have standardized on different platforms. Historically, connecting these environments required significant coordination—managing VPN tunnels, working with colocation facilities, and configuring third-party network fabrics. This left networking teams bogged down in undifferentiated heavy lifting.

AWS Interconnect addresses these challenges head-on. It is a managed Layer 3 connectivity service that supports both multicloud (AWS to other clouds) and last-mile (AWS to on-premises networks) scenarios. Both capabilities are built on a fully managed, turnkey model that eliminates infrastructure complexity.

What This Means for Enterprise Networking

With AWS Interconnect, teams can establish private, high-speed network connections with dedicated bandwidth using just a few clicks in the AWS Console. They select their location, partner, preferred Region, and bandwidth requirements, removing the friction of partner discovery and manual configuration. Traffic flows over the AWS global backbone and the partner cloud’s private network—never the public internet—ensuring predictable latency, consistent throughput, and isolation from congestion.

Security is built in by default. Every physical link between AWS routers and partner cloud routers uses IEEE 802.1AE MACsec encryption. No separate configuration is needed. However, each cloud provider manages encryption independently on its own backbone, so teams should review specific encryption documentation for their deployment.

Multicloud Connectivity Details

The multicloud capability starts with support for Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) coming later in 2026. This private Layer 3 connection gives customers the reliability of a leased line without owning any physical infrastructure.

Last-Mile Connectivity

The new last-mile option simplifies connections from branch offices and data centers by leveraging existing network providers. This enables enterprises to extend their AWS connectivity seamlessly to remote locations, reducing latency and improving security compared to internet-based VPNs.
